The political landscape in Punjab is buzzing with whispers of a major reunion. Nearly four years after walking away from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) is now hinting at a return to its former partnership with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The push for a reconciliation began when senior party leader Bikram Singh Majithia claimed that the people of Punjab are calling for the two parties to work together again. He argued that their past alliance was a symbol of brotherhood that kept the state stable and united, helping to bridge the divide between different communities.
This shift in tone follows a mysterious meeting between SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal and Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier this month. Shortly after, MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal suggested that the political arrangements which previously brought development projects from Delhi to Punjab might soon be back on the table, though she stopped short of confirming a formal deal.
The two parties famously split in 2020 during the intense protests over the now-repealed farm laws. While the SAD acknowledges that history, leaders are now pointing to the current state of law and order and economic concerns as reasons why a reunion makes sense. However, the BJP has not yet committed, with many of its local leaders insisting they are still preparing to contest all 117 assembly seats alone in 2027.
Experts believe the biggest hurdle will be the seat-sharing agreement. In the past, the Akali Dal acted as the senior partner, but the BJP is now likely to push for a more equal split. Whether this budding romance leads to a full-blown political marriage remains to be seen as both sides weigh their options ahead of the next big election.
