Who would have thought that a simple cup of tea could be a lifesaver? Keepers at a popular aquarium are using chilled black tea to treat an abandoned baby seal suffering from a painful eye infection.
The two-month-old pup, affectionately named Frankie, was rescued by a passerby on a beach in Redcar. She was in a bad state, weighing only 8kg and covered in cuts and bruises when she arrived at the Sea Life centre in Scarborough.
While the seal received standard medication for her other health issues, her vets wanted to avoid over-medicating her with too many strong drugs. They suggested a natural approach for her eyes: regular baths using cooled, strong black tea.
The treatment has been a massive success. According to staff at the centre, the natural tannins in the tea helped clear up the infection quickly, proving that sometimes the best solutions are the simplest ones found in nature.
Frankie is now on the road to recovery and getting stronger by the day. Her story serves as a gentle reminder that even in the world of professional veterinary care, traditional wisdom still has a very important place.
