The Jamaica Fire Brigade (JFB) has officially launched a specialized Drone Unit to modernize how it handles emergencies. By deploying unmanned aerial vehicles, the brigade aims to boost its speed and precision when battling dangerous blazes and conducting rescue missions.
Fourteen firefighters have completed intensive training to operate these advanced machines. These drones are equipped with thermal imaging technology, which allows crews to detect body heat and hidden hotspots that are invisible to the naked eye, even through thick smoke.
This technology is already proving to be a game-changer. Assistant Superintendent Carlynton Beason, who leads the unit, noted that the drones have drastically shortened the time needed to bring massive infernos, such as the frequent fires at the Riverton Landfill, under control. Operations that previously dragged on for weeks are now being managed in just a few days.
Before this rollout, the brigade often had to rely on the military’s helicopter fleet for aerial views. Now, the JFB can quickly deploy its own drones to pinpoint exactly where resources are needed most. This shift not only saves time but also ensures that firefighters are positioned more strategically on the ground.
The newly trained drone pilots will be stationed across the island to ensure rapid coverage for all citizens. This move marks a significant step forward in the brigade's commitment to using modern technology to keep the public safe.
