Nigeria’s quest for stable electricity has received a major boost after the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) successfully cleared essential power equipment that had been abandoned at various seaports for years. This move is expected to fast-track long-delayed power projects across the country.
The equipment, which belongs to the Niger Delta Power Holding Company Limited (NDPHC), had been stuck in port terminals, risking massive financial losses. By facilitating the swift release of these materials, the NPA has helped the power firm avoid losing billions of naira that would have been wasted on storage fees and project delays.
The Managing Director of NDPHC, Jennifer Adighije, revealed this during a visit to the NPA headquarters in Lagos. She praised the NPA leadership for their cooperation, noting that the equipment is vital for completing ongoing power infrastructure that will help improve electricity supply for millions of Nigerians.
Adighije explained that the prolonged delay in clearing these items had previously threatened project timelines and inflated costs. With the intervention of the NPA, contractors can now access the materials needed to get to work immediately, ensuring that critical energy projects do not stall any further.
In his response, the Managing Director of the NPA, Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, emphasized the agency’s commitment to supporting national growth. He noted that the NPA remains ready to work with other government bodies to remove bureaucratic hurdles that often slow down the arrival of materials needed for industrial development.
Both agencies have now pledged to maintain a stronger partnership to ensure that future equipment imports move through the ports without unnecessary friction. This collaboration is seen as a key step in strengthening the nation's energy sector and boosting the overall economy.
